Master of Ceremonies/ Head Clinician
Having just wrapped up his work on set as music director of Pitch Perfect 2, our master of ceremonies and head clinician is the godfather of a cappella himself, Deke Sharon. Born in San Francisco, California, Deke Sharon has been performing professionally since the age of 8, and as a child toured North America and shared the stage in operas with the likes of Pavarotti. Heralded as “The Father of Contemporary A Cappella,” he is responsible for the current sound of modern a cappella, having created the dense vocal-instrumental sound in college, subsequently spreading it around the world.
As the founder, director and arranger for the HOUSE JACKS, the original “Rock Band Without Instruments,” Deke has shared the stage with countless music legends, including Ray Charles, James Brown, Crosby Stills and Nash, Run DMC, The Temptations, LL Cool J and the Four Tops, and performed for luminaries including President Bill Clinton. The House Jacks have eight albums, and dozens of international tours to their names, including multiple appearances Carnegie Hall, and performed the MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL THEME with Hank Williams Jr. in 2011. Deke produces “THE SING-OFF” worldwide (USA, Netherlands, China), which had the highest ratings of any new, unscripted television show in the US in 2009, and was the third highest rated show on NBC in 2010. In addition, Deke served as arranger, on-site music director and vocal producer for Universal’s “PITCH PERFECT” starring Anna Kendrick (2012). Deke founded the CONTEMPORARY A CAPPELLA SOCIETY while in college, and is responsible for many seminal a cappella programs, including the CARAS (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards, ICCAS (International Championship of College A Cappella), BOCA (Best of College A Cappella Compilation), the first contemporary a cappella conferences (the A Cappella Summit), the newly formed CONTEMPORARY A CAPPELLA LEAGUE, and the online channel “INSIDE A CAPPELLA.” He is also contemporary A Cappella’s most prolific arranger, having arranged over 2,000 songs, with many of them in print worldwide with Hal Leonard/Contemporary A Cappella Publishing. His first book, “A CAPPELLA ARRANGING” was published in 2012.
Founded in 2011, Musae has already gained acclaim performing at various a cappella festivals and placing at Boston Harmony Sweepstakes. As a powerhouse all-female vocal band, Musae shares a fresh and fun sound while playing on their sense of femininity and womanhood. True to the original Latin, these “muses” seek not to just inspire but also breathe new life into the professional vocal scene in the United States and abroad.
“Musae is the cutting edge of contemporary a cappella music. Professional, stylish, white-hot – total rockstars.”
-Dave Sperandio, Vocal Mastering
“The singers who make up Musae are gifted performers, engaging clinicians, and simply generous people. In a word, they remind us why music is perhaps our most important artform”
-Benjamin Stevens, Director, The Vocal Foundation
The NACC offers three types of performance opportunities for attending groups:

In order to apply to perform please submit a video of your group performing by October 13, 2014. It can be of any length and can include material from last year. However, you must include some footage of the current group. Upon applying you will be considered for all 3 performance types by a panel of expert judges. Groups will only be eligible for one performance slot, and will be notified of their selection by October 24, 2014. Judging will be blind, meaning that no identification will be made of any group until it is chosen based on merit.
High school groups have been showing their incredible abilities for years, and we are thrilled to present an educationally-focused competition to highlight them.
High school groups are invited to apply to compete at the NACC in the state of the art Sparks Chapel and Performing Arts Center. With over $1 million in A/V equipment alone, your group is guaranteed to sound their best. 24 individual microphones, top of the line DigiCo SD 10 mixer, and sound run by The Vocal Company are all at your disposal.
Each group will be asked to perform a song they’ve prepared on their own in addition to a new arrangement given to the group one week in advance of the convention. This will be a properly voice version (Mixed, Men’s, or Women’s) of the same, new arrangement of a popular song. Groups will have that week and a masterclass to learn, refine, adapt, and perfect their own personalized rendition of that song. Each group will then perform that new song along with one of their own for the entire convention, opening for the professional concert Saturday night. Judges will be top a cappella experts, using the AEA Scoring Rubric.
• One-on-one masterclasses will be awarded to winners of the Outstanding Soloist (Male and Female) and Outstanding VP awards (courtesy of TVC).
• Four groups exhibiting outstanding teamwork throughout the course of the competition will be given a free custom arrangement (courtesy of TVC).
Overall winners, as voted by the judges and audience via social media, will receive:
